As countries bordering the Danube , Bulgaria and Germany are linked by an international waterway. The two states are members of the European Union and NATO .

Bulgaria has an embassy in Berlin , a consulate general in Munich and an office in Bonn . Germany operates an embassy in Sofia .

Prince Alexander Joseph von Battenberg from the Hessian noble family Battenberg was the first prince of the Principality of Bulgaria created in 1878 from 1879 to 1886 . He was followed from 1887 to 1918 by Ferdinand I from the German noble family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . In 1908 he accepted the title of Tsar of Bulgaria. During the First World War , the Bulgarians fought under his leadership on the side of Germany and the Central Powers . After the lost war, he had to abdicate in 1918. He was succeeded by his son Boris III. who ruled the country until his death in 1943. Under his rule, Bulgaria fought on the German side in World War II . During the period of his son's rule (due to his minority, a three-person regency councilor led the affairs of state) Simeon II. From 1943 to 1946 then (1944) Bulgaria's declaration of war against the previously allied Third Reich and the seizure of power by the communists, which finally (1946 ) led to the end of the Bulgarian monarchy. The People's Republic of Bulgaria and the GDR attended the 17th October 1949 on diplomatic relations. After the end of communist rule in 1989, the reunified Germany supported the transformation and democratization efforts of Bulgaria in preparation for the EU accession of the Balkan country with various measures and a total of 200 million euros. The last Bulgarian tsar Simeon II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria from 2001 to 2005 as Simeon Sakskoburggotski.

Diplomatic exchange

The German-Bulgarian parliamentary group cultivates the relations between the German Bundestag and the Narodno Sabranie . The chairman in the 18th electoral term is Gernot Erler (SPD). The deputy chairmen are Uda Heller (CDU / CSU) and Roland Claus (Die Linke).

Bulgarian schools in the Federal Republic of Germany

In many cities there is a school with Bulgarian as the language of instruction. These are mostly sponsored by the Bulgarian government. It should be noted, however, that these are usually not state schools, but only registered associations. Some ministries of education accept Bulgarian as the second foreign language for the advanced technical college entrance qualification (Abitur).

In Bulgaria there are several state schools that offer German as a foreign language to Russian & Co. It can also be the case that the students get German as their main subject, as in Germany.
