The European states Germany and Monaco are both members of the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe . Around 900 Germans live in Monaco, which corresponds to around 2.5 percent of the population of Monaco.

Monaco operates an embassy in Berlin . Honorary consuls are active in Düsseldorf , Hamburg , Munich , Potsdam and Stuttgart . The German embassy in Paris is also responsible for Monaco. The Consulate General in Marseille takes on consular duties . There is an honorary consul in Monaco. On October 30, 2012, Susanne Wasum-Rainer became the German ambassador in Monaco.

The International German Club of Monaco , founded in 1973, works to promote charitable, cultural and social issues.

history

In 1962, the two countries signed an extradition treaty and a treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

There were disputes between Germany and Monaco over the question of the extent to which Monaco should be understood as a tax haven . A tax information exchange agreement was signed in 2010 and ratified the following year. It enables Germany to access bank details and information on ownership.

Economic relationships

In 2011 Monaco obtained 26 percent of its imports from Germany, which corresponded to a trade volume of 80.5 million euros. In the same year, it exported 16 percent of its exports to Germany, with a volume of 53 million. According to Monegasque foreign trade statistics, this makes Germany the second most important foreign trade partner after Italy. However, foreign trade with France, with which Monaco has a customs union , is not included in these statistics .

Bilateral meetings

  • September 6, 2010: After the agreement on the exchange of information on tax matters was concluded, the Monegasque Foreign and Finance Minister Franck Biancheri and the German State Secretary Peter Ammon met in Berlin to discuss mainly economic and financial matters.
  • July 2, 2011: The Federal President Christian Wulff attended the wedding ceremony of Albert II and Charlene Wittstock in Monaco.
  • 8-10 November 2011: The General Director of the Foreign Ministry and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Conseil National Gardetto met with State Minister Werner Hoyer , State Secretary Stefan Kapferer , State Secretary Hartmut Koschyk and representatives of the Bundestag as part of the Federal Government's guest program for the small European states.
  • December 8, 2011: Minister of State Werner Hoyer met with Minister of State Michel Roger , then Finance Minister Marco Piccinini and Foreign Minister José Badia in Monaco to hand over the ratification documents for the agreement on the exchange of information in tax matters.
  • 9-10 July 2012: During a visit to Berlin and Stuttgart, Albert II. And his wife Charlène held talks with the Federal President Joachim Gauck , the German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle , the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit and the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann .
