Diplomatic relations between San Marino and the Federal Republic of Germany have existed since October 1, 1995.

The German ambassador to Italy is double accredited in San Marino . San Marino also does not have an independent embassy in Germany, so that the San Marino ambassador in Brussels is responsible for relations between the two countries. In addition, there is a responsible German consulate general in Milan and a San-Marine honorary consul in Munich , which is responsible for the federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg , and in Darmstadt , which is responsible for Hesse , Bremen , Hamburg , Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein .

In addition to visiting German tourists , the support of San Marino for German candidacies for UN bodies plays a major role in the relationship. Common points in international cooperation are, for example, the worldwide abolition of the death penalty and respect for human rights .

Trade, economy and taxes

In contrast to the Federal Republic of Germany, San Marino is neither a member of the European Union nor of the European Economic Area . Most recently, on October 20, 2013, a referendum on joining the EU failed due to insufficient voter turnout. Nevertheless, relations between the European Union and San Marino are close, which consequently also has an impact on German-San Marino relations. Due to agreements with the European Union, Germany and San Marino are in a customs union. Furthermore, both countries use the euro as an official means of payment, with San Marino issuing its own coins .

San Marino exports goods to the value of 7.5 million euros (2012) and imports goods to the value of 31.5 million euros (2012) to Germany. The German-San-Marine Agreement on Assistance in Tax and Criminal Tax Matters through Information Exchange (TIEA) has been in force since December 23, 2011. In addition, negotiations are currently underway on a double taxation agreement, which must be considered in the context of San Marino's financial policy . On March 16, 2005, San Marino ratified an agreement with the EU on the taxation of income from savings of non-residents of San Marino .
