Germany Cup (table tennis)
The Germany Cup was an international table tennis event that took place annually on the Whitsun weekend in Trier from 1987 to 1999 . There were often absolute world-class players at the start. Singles and doubles competitions were held for women and men. The organizer was the TTC Yellow-Red Trier association.
History of the Germany Cup
The forerunners of the Germany Cup were the International Trier City Championships, which have been held since 1954. It was replaced in 2000 by youth and senior tournaments, which still take place today (2014) - again under the name of the International Trier City Championships .
International Trier City Championships
The International Trier City Championships were first held in 1954 by the TTC Yellow-Red Trier under the direction of Heinz Guillaume (* 1928). Initially, mainly active players from the nearby Trier catchment area - including Luxembourg - took part, in the 1960s Bundesliga clubs and increasingly foreign players also traveled. The couple Eberhard and Diane Schöler were regular guests and multiple winners during this time . The tournament initially took place in the Barbara School. Due to the increasing number of participants and the resulting increase in space requirements, it moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in 1965 , to the Post-Sports Hall in 1971 and to the Sports Hall on Mäusheckerweg in 1978.
In the beginning, mixed competitions were played, but later they were limited to single and double competitions. In the 1960s, different performance classes were offered, namely a special class, an A and B class and a senior tournament. In addition, school and youth tournaments have been held since the beginning of 1954. An exception is 1984 when a team tournament for national teams was held. Cash prizes were introduced for the winners in the 1970s.
Germany Cup
In 1987 the tournament was renamed the Germany Cup . The organizer TTC Gelb-Rot Trier now worked closely with the German Table Tennis Association DTTB , which took the tournament into account in its scheduling and was also able to promote participation internationally.
In 1995 the tournament form was changed from the previous knockout system to a round system. After that, four groups were formed in the special class. The four first in the group played another game among themselves, after which the two winners made it to the final group. Six other players automatically qualified for this according to their position in the current ITTF world rankings . The double competitions were canceled.
The Germany Cup was held for the last time in 1999. Heinz Guillaume had withdrawn, and there were increasing financial and scheduling problems. Some athletes also decided not to take part for tactical reasons because they feared losing points in the world rankings.
