Deviate was a Belgian metalcore and hardcore band from Brussels that was formed in 1991 and broke up in 2003.

history

The band was formed in 1991 from the two bands Sixty Nine and Mental Disturbance and consisted of the singer Danny Mouethwil, the guitarist Kirby Michel, the bassist Christian Vankelst and the drummer Laurens Kusters. The musicians, who were all students, founded the label I Scream Records with financial support with Hans Kusters, Laurens' father . In November 1992 the group recorded their first EP Small Traces of Life , which was released in early 1993 on this label. The album was produced by Frank von Bogaet . This was followed by appearances as the opening act for Fear Factory in the Netherlands , as well as a tour through Europe with Excel . In early 1994, the debut album Crisis of Confidence followed. The album was recorded by Channel Zero producer Andre Gielen in Hilversum's Bullet Sound Studio . In Germany the album was released on Massacre Records . This was followed by concerts with groups such as Motörhead , Biohazard and Dog Eat Dog , as well as Leeway and B-Thong . In May 1995 the second album Wreck Style was released , which was produced by Jamie Locke . This was followed by the EP Cold Prejudice , which was only pressed for the Belgian market and was sold out after two weeks. In August 1996 the band played on the first European Vans Warped Tour , with Jo Dehennin joining the band as second guitarist, and a little later released the album Thorn of the Living . Then was Freddy Cricien of Madball included as a guest musician. The album was again produced by Jamie Locke. The band had meanwhile also moved to New York. After a Christmas tour with Backfire , the group went on their first tour of Japan. Here the group recorded the live album One by One . After this was released in 1999, the next studio album, State of Grace , followed that same year . In the US, the album was distributed through Too Damn Hype . The publication was followed by a tour of the Benelux countries and another through Japan. While preparing for the album Red Asunder , the band performed with Slayer , Pantera and Sepultura and also played at the Beast Feast Festival in Yokohama in front of 40,000 fans. The release of Red Asunder in the summer of 2002. The CD version of the album included a second CD that unreleased and live material contained. On December 5th, 2003 the band played their last gig in Brussels. The announced reunion appearances in January 2009 led to legal disputes between the members. A court called upon by drummer Kusters prohibited the other band members from using the band name without Kusters' consent.

style

According to laut.de , the album Crisis of Confidence is “absolutely excessive” for a hardcore album. Red Asunder is comparable to the music of Biohazard and Sick of It All . According to Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer, the band play aggressive hardcore on State of Grace . Compared to its predecessors, the album is more ambitious because it is more straightforward. Claudia Nitsche from Metal Hammer found the live album One by One unnecessary, although the sound carrier would also have poor sound quality. According to Elmar Salmutter from Metal Hammer , Red Asunder is picking up where State of Grace left off. The group play dark, aggressive Metalcore, with occasional quieter passages to give the listener time to breathe deeply.

According to Marc Lohausen from Ox-Fanzine, the band on Wreck Style play a mix of hardcore from the 1980s and metallic New York hardcore from the late 1990s. The music is comparable to works by Madball and Subzero . Lohausen heard a crossover of hardcore and metal on One by One , reminiscent of biohazard, while the group sounds like Merauder in the slower passages of the songs and like Madball in the faster passages .
