action

Sabine Köster swears her husband and her two daughters that they would be able to cope with it once a year that her sister, the widowed Eva Beckstedt, would visit them. Her attempt to highlight positive things about Eva fails miserably, however. As soon as Eva is there, she is already giving out pretty vicious tips in all directions. The Köster family breathes a sigh of relief when the birthday visit for this year can be ticked off again.

On her return, Eva is approached in the stairwell by Ms. Metz, who asks her to give her 16-year-old son Dennis a job in her workshop, but Eva strictly refuses. When she goes bowling with friends, Eva can't hold back with insulting remarks, and in the end she always insists that one should still be able to express one's opinion. When she comes back that evening, she is in for a nasty surprise. Her shop has been broken into, as has Ms. Metz's shop, and she was seriously injured. Eva has a picture frame business that is totally devastated. Through this event Eva got to know two men who couldn't be more different, on the one hand the courteous detective inspector Ferdinand Brixen, whom Eva seems to like, and on the other hand the down-to-earth and unusual painter Harry Stockert. He's been sent by the property management to renovate Eva's business. Although Eva makes fun of him at first, he manages to find access to the rationally minded art connoisseur, especially since he helps her out of a sticky situation.

When Brixen invites Eva, it is difficult for her to admit to herself that she is happy. When, while eating, she said that nobody had to worry about her, Brixen replied that maybe someone would want that and explained when asked that there was a lovable core behind her rough shell. The evening offers another surprise. Dennis has left the youth home he was put in until his mother can take care of him again. He asks Eva for support, which she refuses, whereupon he explains in drastic words what he thinks of her. After a conversation with Harry Stockert, who tells her that he was once in a youth home, Eva changes her mind and agrees to take over the supervision of Dennis while his mother is in the hospital. This does not go without setbacks, but it not only leads to Eva, but also to Dennis, that both of them converge and gradually change. When Ms. Metz is released from the hospital, Eva realizes how much the responsibility and being with Dennis meant to her. The boy makes it clear to her, however, that their contact will not break off.

It's Sabine's birthday again and this time a completely different Eva appears. She is accompanied by Harry Stockert and Ferdinand Rixen as well as Dennis and the greeting is completely different than in previous years. And the celebration is happy and exuberant too. Eva has become a different person, she thinks life is “wonderful, simply wonderful”.
