action

The marriage of fashion photographer Vincent Mandel is in ruins. A bitter custody dispute breaks out over the children Juliette and Matthieu. As if that weren't enough, the model Sofia begins to seduce Vincent during a shoot and then accuses him of rape, so that Vincent is temporarily placed in custody. That worsens his chances in the custody battle immensely. Once at large, Sofia asks him for a talk. The ad was a set game. Sofia had the assignment to fake the rape. But the intrigue does not end with this confession. Vincent loses consciousness during the conversation due to knockout drops and when he comes to, Sofia's body is in his trunk.

Due to the events still off the track, he meets his former schoolmate Joseph Plender on the way home. He spontaneously takes over the disposal of the corpse and from now on interferes remarkably often in Vincent's private life, so that it already seems intrusive. Then Plender reveals his true colors. He owns photos showing Sofia and Vincent naked in bondage situations and while Vincent was unconscious. Plender is demanding what he calls financial support. His blackmail turns out to be late revenge. A test of courage between the two 13-year-old boys ended with Plender's rape by a homeless person in an empty sanatorium. Vincent had previously pushed him down the stairs into a dark room and slammed the door behind him, unaware of the clochard's presence.

Vincent lures Plender into the half-ruined sanatorium that still exists and where the story began. Vincent's plan works: Plender appears in the empty building and stresses himself in conversation with Vincent. A voice recorder records the confession before Vincent manages to kill Plender in a duel.

Background information

The budget for the film was EUR 8.8 million. This is offset by income from cinema screenings of EUR 5.7 million.

Pierre Richard only got the role of Cendras on condition that he had his beard and hair trimmed. He hesitated, but finally agreed, being very impressed with the script. Shaved clean and in a suit, he hardly recognized himself.

The film was shot in the Paris suburbs of Aincourt , Asnières-sur-Seine , Cergy and Cachan , among others . In Cachan the cemetery and in Asnières-sur-Seine a branch of the Sorbonne were used. In Aincourt, an unused outbuilding on the grounds of the sanatorium served as a backdrop. The Paris Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) also served as a film set for some scenes.

The film premiered on December 8, 2006 at the International Film Festival in Marrakech. One month later, on January 10, 2007, it was released in French cinemas and after another four weeks it was premiered in Germany at the European Film Market .

Reviews

"Well played, dark noir thriller based on classic models, but which does not build up any particular tension and suffers from a number of script weaknesses."

"Eric Barbier's psychological thriller" The Snake "puts the viewer in a state of high tension from the first to the last minute. With his breathtakingly dark staging and haunting cast, Barbier creates a dark, ominous and absolutely unique world. Plender's oedipal relationship with the dead mother follows the tradition of Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's “Psycho”, but possesses the cruelty and ingenuity of Hannibal Lecter and also has his underlying sexual charisma [...]. Barbier creates a modern, erotic film noir masterpiece from familiar noir elements such as unpunished guilt, femme fatale, hopelessness and the Moloch big city. "

“Conceived as an abysmal psychological thriller with a touch of Hitchcock, the duel between two dissimilar opponents not only convinces with its razor-sharp plotting, but also with its actors: At the side of Yvan Attal you can experience“ Asterix ”Clovis Cornillac and the new Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.
