Dieter Farwick

Dieter Farwick (born June 17, 1940 in Schopfheim ) is a German officer ( retired Brigadier General ) in the German army and a publicist . He is considered an expert in international security policy.

Life

Military background

Farwick was born in 1940 in southwest Germany . After attending school, on April 4, 1961, he joined the Panzer Grenadier Battalion 51 in Schwarzenborn of the Bundeswehr. In 1962 he completed the officer training course at the Army Officer School II in Hamburg and the Combat Troop School II in Munster. After being promoted to lieutenant in 1963, he was employed as a platoon leader and communications officer in the 191 Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Ahlen. In 1966 he became a first lieutenant and lecture hall director at the Army Officer's School I in Hanover. In 1968 he was employed as a company commander in Panzergrenadierbataillon 172 in Lübeck and a year later he was promoted to captain . From 1971 to 1973 he completed the general staff course (H) at the command academy of the Federal Armed Forces (FüAkBw) in Hamburg with meanwhile promotion to major (1972). Subsequently he was G2 in the 10th Panzer Division in Sigmaringen and from 1975 G3 in the 29th Panzer Brigade in Sigmaringen. In 1977 he became a lieutenant colonel . From 1978 to 1979 he was the commander of the 471 Jäger Battalion in Bexbach. In 1980 he was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn as a consultant in the command staff of the Army (Fü H). In 1983 he was promoted to colonel . From 1983 to 1987 he was head of the department in the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense (PlStab) Manfred Wörner . In 1988 he was trained at the Royal College of Defense Studies (RCDS) in London. From 1989 to 1991 he was used as the commander of Panzergrenadierbrigade 17 in Hamburg. In 1991 he became head of the Bundeswehr Intelligence Office (ANBw) in Bad Neuenahr. From 1994 he was Assistant Chief of Staff Operations in the Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum in the Netherlands. With the rank of brigadier general, which he reached in 1991, he was retired.

Farwick is married and has two children. He lives in Sigmaringen .

Journalism

Since his retirement he has worked as a publicist and speaker in the field of international security policy. For many years he was editor- in- chief of Hubertus Hoffmann's online newspaper World Security Network . He published u. a. in military journals such as Allgemeine Schweizerische Militärzeitschrift , Europäische Wehrkunde , Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift , Schweizer Soldat und Soldat und Technik . He is also the author of several books.

He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London.
