Dieter Mickein

Dieter Mickein (born March 16, 1944 in Sagar ,) is a former German racing cyclist who was active in the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s .

Athletic career

Mickein was a state amateur in GDR cycling and active as a road rider. He drove for the DHfK Leipzig sports club . Because of his position on the bike, reminiscent of Fausto Coppi , "Coppi" became his nickname. He completed his first successful year in 1963, when he was the best young driver in this race. He took top places in numerous regional road races and was the winner of the Rund um das Elstertal. At the Tour of Yugoslavia in 1963 he reached seventh place in the individual standings and won the team standings with the GDR team . In the 1963 GDR tour, he fought for sixth place and was named the best young driver.

The highlight of his career was the six participations in the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt . He was one of the few who was able to win their first peace trip (1964) in the first year of their participation. In the overall standings he finished 11th and was 21st a year later. In 1968 he won another stage and was ninth overall. He achieved his best result in the individual ranking in 1969 with fifth place and two stage wins. In 1970 he had to give up after a fall on the ninth part of the day. Overall, he came to four stage wins in the six peace races.

In 1969 he was double champion at the GDR road championships when he won both the individual race and the 100 km team race with the DHfK team . This year he also started at the UCI Road World Championships and was the best GDR driver in 28th place. He won further victories at the Sachsenring races in 1965 and 1969, at Rund um Sebnitz in 1966 and Berlin-Leipzig in 1968, and at the Grandstand Mountain Prize in 1971. In 1969, when he won the GDR championship, he was also the best rider in the annual ranking of the GDR Cycling Association . He won an international title at the 1966 and 1969 Railroad Sports Championships (USIC).

In 1972, at the age of 28, he hung his racing bike on the famous “nail”. After his active career, he appeared again in 1982 as a co-author of the specialist book cycling .
