Dietrich Langen (1973)

Dietrich Karl Langen (born November 16, 1913 in Apia , German Samoa ; † March 20, 1980 in Bad Gastein ) was a German doctor, psychotherapist and university professor of psychotherapy , founder of medical psychology , pioneer of group psychotherapy in Germany and one of the most important Representative of hypnotic and auto-hypnotic procedures in post-war Germany.

Live and act

Dietrich Langen was born in Apia on Samoa (then a German colony) in 1913 as the son of the German planter and engineer Erich Langen and his wife Johanna, nee. von Scheidt, born. After the First World War , after being expelled from Samoa in 1920, his path led via New Zealand to the Lower Rhine, from there to Vienna in 1921 and to Breslau in 1928 .

After graduating from high school in 1933, he began studying human medicine at the University of Munich and also studied at the University of Freiburg , the University of Breslau and the University of Kiel , where he passed his medical state examination in December 1938 and received his doctorate with the dissertation “Experimental Studies about the erythema effect of solar and sky radiation. "

From December 1938 to April 1939 he was a medical intern at the Homburg State Hospital , then until May 1943 he was a research assistant at the Neurological University Clinic in Breslau under Viktor von Weizsäcker . In May 1943 he was called up for military service and worked as a medical officer on the Eastern Front, mainly surgically in various field hospitals .

After a period of imprisonment from April 1945 to January 1946, he took over the management of the surgical department of the hospital in Meischendorf (today the district of Wangels in Schleswig-Holstein ) and, from July 1946, the management of a ward for paraplegics in Neustadt and a ward for brain injuries in Flensburg and at the same time a neurological department in the hospital in Malente-Gremsmühlen , which he expanded into a psychotherapeutic station. Here he introduced inpatient group psychotherapy and was one of the pioneers of this form of therapy in Germany.

On December 1, 1950, he was recognized as a specialist in nervous and mental diseases. In January 1951 he switched to Ernst Kretschmer at the Tübingen University Neurological Clinic ; initially as an unpaid volunteer, in July 1951 as a research assistant.

In 1958 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on "Methodical Problems of Clinical Psychotherapy". From March of the same year he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Tübingen . In 1964 he was made an adjunct professor. In October 1965 he was appointed to the newly created chair for “Psychotherapy and Medical Psychology” at the University of Mainz , the first such professorship in Europe. In 1967 he was promoted to director of the University Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychotherapy at the University of Mainz , which he headed until March 20, 1980.

The "stepped active hypnosis" inaugurated by Ernst Kretschmer was further developed by Langen into a two-pronged psychotherapy in which an attempt is made to achieve an optimal therapeutic effect in the case of psychosomatic and neurotic disorders during a limited treatment period by combining auto / hypnoid and depth psychological components .

Dietrich Langen was married to Margarethe Langen, who supported him in his work.
