Dion Parson

Dion Parson (born June 11, 1967 in Saint Thomas ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Parson started playing the trombone in school but switched to drums when he was 15. He has received awards and grants to attend summer school at Interlochen Music Academy in Michigan. In 1985 he went to study at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he studied with Keith Copeland and William Moersch until 1990 . In 1994 he began private studies with Michael Carvin .

After graduating, he played with musicians as diverse as Milt Jackson , Monty Alexander , Steve Grossman , Gary Bartz , Geri Allen , Donald Harrison , Don Byron , David Sanchez , Lee Konitz , Ernest Ranglin , Terell Stafford , Cyrus Chestnut , Babatunde Olatunji , Baaba Maal , Joanne Brackeen , Freda Payne or Steve Turre . With Ron Blake he founded the 21st Century Band in 1998 , which reflects the musical tradition of the Virgin Islands and in which he also worked with Wycliffe Gordon . Between 1990 and 2015 he was involved in 28 recordings in the field of jazz, including with Ray Anderson ( Wishbone ), Marc Cary , Laurent de Wilde and Jon Faddis .

Since 1992, Parson has also been a professor at Rutgers University and other institutions. He also works as the creative director of United Jazz International, founded by Branford Marsalis and Steve Coleman .
