On June 28, 2018, DisneyToon Studios stopped work.
history
Disney MovieToons
Disney MovieToons produced its first film DuckTales: The Movie - Raiders of the Lost Lamp in 1990. Walt Disney Animation France was responsible for the animation. In 1993, Disney Television Animation hired Sharon Morrill to lead future projects.
Disney began direct-to-video sequels to its feature films: The First, Jafar's Return , the sequel to Aladdin , in 1994. When the film was a commercial success, the studio focused on more direct-to -Video projects. Another sequel, called Aladdin and the Thief King , was released in 1996. The animation work was assigned to the Australian and Japanese departments.
After the resignation of Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg in August 1994, Disney Studios was split into Disney Video Premieres and Disney Television Animation and moved under the direction of Walt Disney Television and Telecommunications .
Morrill was responsible for the first direct-to-video film called Disney Video Premieres , Jafar's Return . With the success of the film, direct-to-video sales soared, so Disney began assigning more and more projects to animation studios abroad. Morrill was named vice president of the studio in late 1997.
In September 1997 Disney MovieToons and Disney Video Premieres were sometimes re-published. This time under the direction of Walt Disney Television.
In 1997 the department released the short film Redux Riding Hood , which was nominated for an Oscar a year later . This was followed by other direct-to-video sequels, including Beauty and the Beast: Magic Christmas (1997), Pocahontas 2 - Journey to a New World (1998), The Lion King 2 - Simba's Kingdom (1998) and Cinderella 2 - Dreams Come True (2002). In April 1998, MovieToons and Video Premieres were merged, and Morrill was promoted to executive vice president.
DisneyToon Studios
In a reorganization process in 2003, the MovieToons and Video Premieres division was moved from Walt Disney Television Animation to Walt Disney Feature Animation and renamed to its current name. Morrill retained her role as Vice President. With the split, not only was DisneyToon responsible for direct-to-video, but Disney Television Animation as well.
In June 2004, Disney closed the animation studio in Japan, one of two overseas studios with which DisneyToon worked. In March 2005, Morrill finally received the title of President. After 17 years, DisneyToon Studios Australia also closed in October 2006.
After purchasing Pixar , John Lasseter also joined the company. He was of the opinion that DisneyToon was taking the value of classic feature films by producing sequels and prequels . When Tinker Bell's production ran into complications in 2008, Disney reconsidered the department's focus. As a result, Sharon Morrill gave up her title and took on another position in the company. In June 2007, Alan Bergman took over the management. Ed Catmull and Lasseter were considered advisors. Lasseter voted to withdraw all future DisneyToon Studios projects. Planned sequels to Himmel und Huhn (2005), Pinocchio (1940) and Aristocats (1970) have therefore been deleted. The production of Tinker Bell has ended and the release of Arielle the Mermaid 3 has been paused.
Meredith Roberts moved from Disney Television Animation to DisneyToon in January 2008, where she served as Vice President and General Manager. In April 2008 it was announced that DisneyToon would no longer focus on sequels, but on spin-offs . The division was under the direction of the newly named Disney Feature Animation Studio, now Disney Animation Studios, directed by Catmull and Lasseter.
