About this picture

The administrative division of Bhutan comprises 20 districts ( Dzongkhag , Dzongkha : རྫོང་ ཁག, Wylie : rdzong khag ). In seven of the 20 districts there are sub- districts ( Dungkhag ), between one and three per district.

The further subdivision takes place in blocks (Dzongkha: Gewog ), whereby not all Gewogs of a district belong to a sub-district, and partly further in Chiwogs , to which villages in the districts are united.

The Kingdom of Bhutan was originally divided into four zones (Dzongkha: Dzongdey ) at the top level . This structure is no longer used officially. The zones were Eastern, Southern, Central, and Western.

In total, there are or were six administrative levels:

  • 4 zones ( Dzongdey , historical)
  • 20 districts ( Dzongkhag )
  • 31 sub- districts ( Dungkhag , partially)
  • 201 blocks ( weighed ) and 61 cities
  • 1044 Chiwogs
  • Villages

[1] Only seven districts have sub-districts ( dungkhag ), and in only one (Sarpang) the sub-districts form an area-wide subdivision.

On April 26, 2007, the Lhamozingkha Dungkhag (sub-district) was formally transferred from Sarpang Dzongkhag to Dagana Dzongkhag. This affected three Gewog (Lhamozingkha, Deorali and Nichula (Zinchula) and the city of Lhamozingkha) that formed the westernmost part of the Sarpang Dzongkhag and now form the southernmost part of the Dagana Dzongkhag. This change is not yet reflected in the table above.
