The Lagunas district is located in the Ayabaca Province in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on February 23, 1946. It has an area of ​​190 km². At the 2017 census , there were 5880 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 5441, in 2007 6625. The administrative seat is the 2216  m high village of Lagunas with 361 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lagunuas is located 22 km southwest of the provincial capital Ayabaca .

Geographical location

The Lagunas district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera, in the center of the Ayabaca province. It has a longitudinal extension in north-south direction of 21 km and a maximum width of 16 km. The Río Quiroz , left tributary of the Río Chira , flows west along the northeastern district boundary.

The Lagunas District is bordered on the southwest by the district Frías , on the west by the district Sapillica , in the northwest on the district Paimas , on the north by the district Montero , in the northeast on the district Ayabaca and to the southeast by the district Pacaipampa .
