The Montero district is located in the Ayabaca province in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on March 24, 1935. It has an area of 130 km². At the 2017 census , there were 6,659 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 8474, in 2007 7337. The administrative seat is the 1062 m high village of Montero with 1153 inhabitants (as of 2017). Montero is 12 km west of the provincial capital Ayabaca .
Geographical location
The district of Montero is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central north of the province of Ayabaca near the Ecuadorian border. The Río Quiroz , left tributary of the Río Chira , flows along the southwest and western borders to the northwest and drains the district area.
The district of Montero borders in the north on the districts Suyo , Jililí and Sícchez in the southeast on the district Ayabaca , in the southwest on the district Lagunas and in the west on the district Paimas .
