The district of Frías is located in the province of Ayabaca in the region of Piura in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1825. It has an area of 568.81 km². In the 2017 census , 19,896 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 20,338, in 2007 23,005. The administrative center is the small town of Frías at an altitude of 1650 m with 2000 inhabitants (as of 2017). Frías is about 40 km southwest of the provincial capital Ayabaca .
Geographical location
The district of Frías is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the Ayabaca province. It has a lengthwise extension in NW-SE direction of almost 40 km and a maximum width of about 22 km. The continental divide runs east of the district. The area is drained to the southwest towards the Río Piura .
The district of Frías borders in the north on the districts Sapillica and Lagunas , in the northeast on the district Pacaipampa , in the southeast on the district Santo Domingo , in the southwest on the district Chulucanas and in the west on the district Tambogrande .
