The Ayabaca district is located in the Ayabaca Province in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 1549.99 km². At the 2017 census , there were 30,852 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 23,995, in 2007 24,760. The administrative seat is the provincial capital Ayabaca , situated 1967 m high, with 5985 inhabitants (as of 2017). The Aypate Inca ruins are located 17.5 km east-southeast of Ayabaca.
Geographical location
The Ayabaca district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northeast of the Ayabaca province. It has a lengthwise extension in NW-SE direction of about 60 km and a maximum width of about 30 km. The eastern district boundary runs along the continental divide . The area is drained to the northwest via the Río Calvas , the left source river of the Río Macará .
The Ayabaca district borders Ecuador in the north . The Río Calvas and its left source river Río Espindola run along the state border. In the southeast, the Ayabaca district borders on the El Carmen de la Frontera district , in the south on the Pacaipampa district and in the west on the Lagunas , Montero , Sícchez and Jililí districts .
