The El Carmen de la Frontera district is located in the Huancabamba Province in the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 4, 1964. It has an area of 647 km². The 2017 census counted 11,784 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 10,449, in 2007 12,681. The administrative center is the village of Sapalache, 2450 m above sea level, with 576 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sapalache is located 10 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Huancabamba .
Geographical location
The El Carmen de la Frontera district is located in the northern Peruvian Andes in the north of the Huancabamba province. The Río Canchis , a right tributary of the Río Chinchipe , and its left source river, the Río Blanco, form the northern border. The west of the district is drained to the south via the Río Huancabamba .
The El Carmen de la Frontera district is bordered by the Huancabamba district to the south, the Pacaipampa and Ayabaca districts to the west (both in the Ayabaca province ), Ecuador to the north, the Namballe district to the east and the Tabaconas district to the southeast ( both in the province of San Ignacio ).
