The Huarmaca district is located in the Huancabamba Province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on October 8, 1840. It has an area of 1908.22 km². At the 2017 census , 35,548 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 35,265, in 2007 39,416. The administrative center is the small town of Huarmaca at an altitude of 2194 m with 3477 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huarmaca is 37 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Huancabamba .
Geographical location
The Huarmaca district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the south of the Huancabamba province. It has a length in north-south direction of 55 km and a maximum width of about 50 km. The continental divide runs roughly centrally in a north-south direction through the district. In the east, the Río Huancabamba , which flows south, forms the district boundary . In the west, the district extends to the western edge of the Western Cordillera. In the southwest the district extends to the upper reaches of the Río Olmos . The headwaters of the Río Piura are centrally located in the district.
The district of Huarmaca borders in the northwest with the district Salitral ( province Morropón ), in the north with the district San Miguel de El Faique , in the northeast with the districts Sondorillo and Sóndor , in the east with the districts Sallique and San Felipe (both in the province Jaén ), to the southeast to the Pomahuaca district (also in the Jaén province), to the south to the Salas district ( Lambayeque province ) and to the southwest to the Olmos district (also in the Lambayeque province).
