The Sóndor district is located in the Huancabamba province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​343 km². At the 2017 census, there were 7,494 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 7901, in 2007 it was 8399. The administrative seat is the village of Sóndor at an altitude of 2050  m with 878 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sóndor is located 9.5 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Huancabamba .

Geographical location

The Sóndor District is located in the east of the Huancabamba Province. The length in north-south direction is 30 km, the width is 13 km. The Río Huancabamba flows south along the western district boundary. The watershed of the Peruvian Central Cordillera runs along the eastern district boundary . In the north the district is bounded by the course of the Quebrada Chantaco, in the south by the course of the Quebrada Mazin. In the extreme southeast rises the up to 3946  m high Cerro Bravo.

The district of Sóndor borders in the extreme southwest with the district Huarmaca , in the west with the district Sondorillo , in the north with the district Huancabamba , in the east with the district Tabaconas ( province San Ignacio ) and in the south with the district Sallique ( province Jaén ).
