The Magdalena district is located in the Cajamarca Province in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​215.38 km². The 2017 census counted 8,271 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8,813, in 2007 it was 9,191. The district administration is located in the small town of Magdalena ( ) with 1,846 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 1290  m . Magdalena is located 19 km southwest of the provincial and regional capital Cajamarca on the right bank of the west-flowing Río Jequetepeque (in sections also Río Magdalena). The national road 8 from Cajamarca to Ciudad de Dios runs through the district.

Geographical location

The Magdalena district is located in the west of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the south-west of the Cajamarca province. The Río Jequetepeque flows west along the southern district boundary.

The Magdalena District is bordered to the north by the district Chetilla , in the northeast on the district of Cajamarca , on the east by the district of San Juan , on the southeast by the district Asunción , in the southwest of the district Contumazá ( province Contumazá ) and on the west by the district San Bernardino ( Province of San Pablo ).

Chemical accident at Choropampa

Choropampa, located in the Magdalena district, achieved tragic international fame when a tanker truck loaded with mercury crashed on June 2, 2000. The accident resulted in numerous deaths and deformities.
