The Ongoy district is located in the Chincheros province in the Apurímac region in central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. On December 20, 2015, parts of the district in the east and south-east were split off and have since formed the two newly founded districts of El Porvenir and Rocchacc .

The district area is 115 km². The 2017 census counted 2,479 inhabitants. The district administration is located in the village of Ongoy at an altitude of about 2768  m with 323 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ongoy is 14 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Chincheros .

Geographical location

The district of Ongoy is located in the Andean highlands in the central northeast of the province of Chincheros. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is almost 20 km, the maximum width 10.5 km. In the northeast, the district extends almost to the right bank of the Río Pampas flowing to the southeast .

The district of Ongoy borders in the west and in the north with the district Huaccana , in the east with the district El Porvenir, in the southeast with the district Rocchacc and in the southwest with the districts Anco Huallo and Chincheros .
