The district of San José is located in the Pacasmayo province in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . It has an area of ​​39.36 km². The 2017 census counted 11,948 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9958, in 2007 it was 11,414. The district was established on June 21, 1825. The administrative seat is in the small town of San José de Pacasmayo .

Geographical location

The district of San José is located on the southern bank of the Río Jequetepeque about 13 km from the Pacific coast. The maximum length in east-west direction is 35 km. In the far east, the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera rise up to 1,800  m . Desert vegetation prevails in the southeast of the district. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the Río Jequetepeque.

The district of San José borders in the west on the districts Pacasmayo and Jequetepeque , in the north on the district Guadalupe , in the northeast on the district Yonán ( province Contumazá in the region Cajamarca ) and in the south on the district San Pedro de Lloc .
