The Santa Catalina de Mossa district is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on May 22, 1958. It has an area of ​​80.4 km². At the 2017 census, 3846 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 4555, in 2007 4289. The administrative seat is the 850  m high village of Paltashaco with 360 inhabitants (as of 2017). Paltashaco is located 30 km east of the provincial capital Chulucanas .

Geographical location

The Santa Catalina de Mossa district is located in the central northeast of the Morropón province. The district extends over the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district is located in the catchment area of the Río Piura . The Río Las Gallegas flows along the western district boundary, the Río Chalaco along the eastern district boundary to the southwest. Both rivers flow into the Río Corrales, which borders the district in the south.

The Santa Catalina de Mossa district borders in the southwest on the Morropón district , in the northwest on the Santo Domingo district , in the northeast on the Chalaco district , in the southeast on the Yamango , in the east on the San Juan de Bigote district and in the south on the district Buenos Aires .
