The district of San Juan de Bigote is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 29, 1986. It has an area of ​​245.21 km². At the 2017 census, there were 6,433 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 7574, in 2007 6965. The administrative seat is the 174  m high small town Bigote with 2205 inhabitants (as of 2017). Bigote is about 50 km southeast of the provincial capital Chulucanas . In addition to Bigote, there is also a larger town in the La Pareja district with 1382 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The district of San Juan de Bigote is located in the east of the province of Morropón. It is located in the western foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera , which reach heights of 1300 and 1000 m in the north and south of the district. The Río Bigote , a right tributary of the Río Piura , flows through the district in a westerly direction. The district has a lengthwise extension in NW-SE direction of about 21 km and a maximum width of about 15 km.

The district of San Juan de Bigote is bordered to the west by the Salitral district , to the northwest by the Buenos Aires district , to the north by the Yamango district , to the northeast by the Lalaquiz district ( Huancabamba province ) and to the east and south by the Canchaque district (also in Huancabamba Province).
