The La Matanza district is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on November 5, 1964. It has an area of ​​1039.46 km². At the 2017 census, there were 13,997 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 12,790, in 2007 12,888. The administrative center is the 116  m high small town of La Matanza with 6,787 inhabitants (as of 2017). La Matanza is just 16 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Chulucanas . Other larger places in the district are Laynes with 2493 inhabitants and Carrasquillo with 1558 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The La Matanza district is located in the southwest of the Morropón province. The Río Piura runs along the northern district boundary to the west. In the far east is the westernmost ridge of the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . To the west of it extends the coastal desert of northwestern Peru, which covers a large part of the district area. The length of the district in NNW-SSE direction is 50 km, the maximum width is 30 km.

The La Matanza district borders in the southwest on the Catacaos district ( Piura province ), in the northwest on the Chulucanas district , in the northeast on the Morropón and Buenos Aires districts , in the east on the Salitral district and in the southeast on the Olmos district ( Lambayeque province ) .
