The women's 100-meter run at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on August 29 and 30, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

In this competition, the sprinters from the GDR recorded a double victory. Silke Gladisch became world champion in the European Championship third in 1986 over 200 meters . Four days later she also won the 200 meter race and won the silver medal on the final day with the GDR sprint relay. Second place went to reigning world and European long jump champion Heike Drechsler , who was also reigning European champion over 200 meters and won bronze long jump here five days later. Third place went to the Jamaican Olympic third from 1984, Merlene Ottey , who was also two-time Olympic third ( 1980/1984 ) and vice world champion in 1983 over 200 meters . Four days later she was awarded another bronze over 200 meters.

Record improvement

The existing World Cup record has been improved twice:

• 10.95 s - Heike Drechsler ( GDR ), 1st semi-final on August 30th (wind: +0.7 m / s)
• 10.90 s - Silke Gladisch ( GDR ), final on August 30th (wind: −0.58 m / s)

In the first semi-final, Silke Gladisch had achieved 10.82 s, but the wind support of 2.2 m / s was 0.2 m / s too strong for a record recognition.

doping

There was a doping case in this competition.

The fifth-placed Canadian Angella Issajenko , formerly Angella Taylor, was involved in the Ben Johnson doping case. She belonged to the same training group as Johnson under Charlie Francis. The doctor responsible for the doping preparations George Astaphan was responsible for Issajenko as well as for Johnson. After Ben Johnson was convicted of the doping offense, Issajenko exposed numerous doping practices and admitted that she had also doped herself. She then received a suspension, among other things, her results achieved at these world championships over 100 meters and with the 4 x 100 meter relay (initially sixth) were canceled.

Three female sprinters in particular were disadvantaged:

• Alice Brown , USA - She should have taken part in the final based on her placement.
• Laurence Bily , France - She had actually qualified for the semi-finals through her time.
• Marie-Ange Wirtz , Seychelles - She was actually entitled to participate in the quarter-finals through her placement.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in seven runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
