The Waksmund Valley ( Dolina Waksmundzka in Polish ), formed by glaciers in the Ice Age, is a side valley of the Bialka Valley in the Polish High Tatras in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . It lies below the hanging valley Waksmunder marmot valley ( Świstówka Waksmundzka ).

geography

The valley is around 5 km long and surrounded by mountains over 2200 m high. a. the Walachenkopf ( Wołoszyn ) and Breitkogel ( Koszysta ) massifs . It has an area of ​​approx. 6 km².

The valley falls from southwest to northeast from about 2000 meters to 1400 meters. The mountain stream Waksmunder Bach flows through it, which flows into the Bialka . In the upper area of ​​the valley there are four smaller mountain lakes. There is a 15-meter high Młyn waterfall by the stream .

etymology

The name can be translated as "Waksmundtal". Waksmund is a village in the Podhale region at the foot of the High Tatras, to which the valley, especially the Hala Waksmundzka pasture , belonged.

Flora and fauna

The valley lies below and above the tree line. It is a strict nature reserve that cannot be entered. Only in the lower area do hiking trails cross the valley. It is a retreat for deer, bears, lynx and wolves.

Alpine farming

Before the Tatra National Park was established in 1954, the valley had been used for alpine farming since the 17th century. After that, the owners of the alpine pastures were expropriated or forced to sell.

tourism

The former hiking trail through the valley to the Krzyżne mountain pass is closed to hikers. In the lower part of the valley it is crossed by three hiking trails.
