The Walachenkopf ( Polish Wołoszyn ) is a mountain massif in the Polish High Tatras in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and the municipality of Bukowina Tatrzańska with a maximum height of 2155  m npm with the Great Walachenkopf ( Wielki Wołoszyn ).

Location and surroundings

Below the massif are the Roztokatal , Waksmunder Tal and Bialkatal valleys . The massif is bordered on the Kreuzsattel ( Krzyżne ) of the massif of wide Kogel ( Koszysta ) to the west and to the massif of Buchentaltürme ( Buczynowe Turnie ) in the south.

The ridge of the massif runs from the Kreuzsattel to the Alm Bialkataler Köhlerei ( Palenica Białczańska ) as follows:

The slopes of the Walachenkopf are up to 700 meters high. They are extremely vulnerable to avalanches. In them there are several caves, u. a. Jaskinia Wołoszyńska Niżnia , Jaskinia Wołoszyńska Wyżnia , Dziura nad Nową Roztoką and Dziura nad Roztoką . The caves serve as winter storage for bears.

etymology

The name Wołoszyn can be traced back to the Polish word Wołosi , which means Wallachian . When the Polish King Władysław IV. Wasa bequeathed the area to shepherds from the Podhale area in 1637 , the massif was already called that. The Wallachians came to the Tatra Mountains in the Middle Ages . An alternative name in German was Wolossyn .

Flora and fauna

The tree line is at an altitude of 1600 meters. The highest tree in Poland grows to an altitude of 2020 meters on the Walachenkopf. The Walachenkopf is a retreat for bears, chamois and marmots. It has been a strictly protected nature reserve since 1936 and is thus protected longer than the Tatra National Park , which was only founded in 1954.

The Wołoszyn ridge was part of the Orla Perć high-altitude path from 1903 to 1932 . The section from Kreuzsattel to Alm Walachenwiese was closed in 1932. Since then, the area has been a strict nature reserve. It is not accessible to hikers.

Culture

To the Wołoszyn than its share lithe highlanders . He is said to be a sleeping dragon associated with the Slavic god Veles . Treasures are said to be hidden in its slopes and its caves are said to have served as a refuge for robbers.
