Waksmund (German: Wachsmund ) is a village with a Schulzenamt of the Nowy Targ municipality in the Nowotarski powiat of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .

geography

The place is located on the left bank of the Dunajec River under the Gorcen between the city of Nowy Targ in the west and Ostrowsko in the east.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1338 and was founded a little earlier under German law. The name is of German descent (formerly Wachszmuuth and Waxmund ). According to a legend, the first settlers from Silesia came to Hedwig von Andechs invitation. Another legend speaks of a leper settlement that formed the origin of the village (perhaps it was the Wilcze Pole settlement , mentioned once in 1250). Traditionally, the inhabitants were mostly shepherds. The parish was mentioned in 1350.

When Poland was first partitioned in 1772, the village became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Kuk monarchy , Waksmund came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by Germany in World War II . On June 4, 1943, five conspirators were killed by Germans, over 30 were deported to the Plaszow concentration camp and their houses destroyed. On September 28, five members of the partisans were killed by the Gestapo and over 50 arrested. In June 1943, the family of Józef Kuraś , pseudonym Ogień (fire), a notorious partisan, was also killed. Józef Kuraś also fought against communists after the war and was shot in Ostrowsko on February 21, 1947.

From 1975 to 1998 Waksmund was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship .
