Domenico Savelli , also Dominco Savelli (* 15. September 1792 in Speloncato , Corsica , † the thirtieth August 1864 in Rome ) was a Corsican priest, politician of the Papal States and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Gregorio Maria Savelli and his wife Agata Maria Arrighi and belonged to a noble family recognized by the Roman Savelli as a distant branch. The Savelli of Corsica were registered in the Libro d'Oro of the Roman nobility by a Senatus Consultum on August 18, 1773 at the instigation of Count Giovanni Battista Savelli, a relative of the Savelli of Speloncato .

Domenico Savelli received after his studies at the seminary of Ajaccio 1816 ordination . He moved in 1818 to Rome, studied theology (1818-1822) and jurisprudence (1818 to 1826) on Sapience level and was 1822 to Doctor of Divinity and 16 June 1829 Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate . In 1827 he was appointed Vicar General of the Bishop of Cesena Antonio Maria Cadolini and on November 23, 1829 as Vicar General of Cardinal Giacomo Giustiniani , Bishop of Imola . Back in Rome, he entered the service of the Curia on December 17, 1832 as papal house prelate and trainee lawyer (February 28, 1833) . Pope Gregory XVI appointed him successively apostolic delegate of Rieti (April 11, 1833), of Frosinone (before August 23, 1834), of Perugia (before July 15, 1838) and of Macerata (July 12, 1841) and raised him before May 28, 1834 as Apostolic Protonotary . In 1841 Domenico Savelli greeted the Pope during his pilgrimage to Loreto in Fabriano and Tolentino. Recalled to Rome, he was appointed cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and member of the Congregation for the Renewal of Accounting in the Papal States on April 21, 1845 . During the conclave of 1846 he was appointed extraordinary commissioner for the four legations of Bologna, Ferrara, Forli and Ravenna. The newly elected Pope Pius IX. successively appointed him Extraordinary Delegate for the Province of Viterbo, then for that of Forli, Pro-Governor of Rome (November 15, 1847), and on December 29, 1847, Minister of Police in the government of Cardinal Ferretti following the abolition of the office of one Governor of Rome. He resigned from ministerial office on February 9, 1848, and subsequently became a member of the new Congregation for the Audit of Public Administration Expenses (February 12, 1848), Vice-Chamberlain of the Roman Church (May 30, 1848) and Consultor of the Congregation for Bishops and regulars (before November 11, 1848). After he fled to Gaeta with the Pope, he was appointed papal commissioner in the provinces of Campagna and Marittima (February 1849) and shortly afterwards papal commissioner in the Marche (April 1849). The day after the restoration of the papal government, he was promoted to extraordinary commissioner of the provinces of Ancona, Urbino, Pesaro, Macerata, Fermo, Ascoli, Camerino and Loreto (June 27, 1849) and directed the restoration of papal power from Ancona. On August 8, 1849, he was again appointed Minister of the Interior and Director General of the Police by the Government Commission (triumvirato rosso) , which consisted of the Cardinals Gabriele della Genga Sermattei , Luigi Vannicelli Casoni and Lodovico Altieri , and he carried out these duties until 1850.

In the consistory of March 7, 1853 Pope Pius IX. him to the college of cardinals. He received the cardinal's hat and the title diaconia Santa Maria in Aquiro on March 10, 1853. On July 4, 1853 he was appointed President of the Consulta for Finance. After differences of opinion with the Pope and Cardinal Secretary of State Giacomo Antonelli , he resigned on December 14, 1859 from his office as President of the State Finance Council. He died on August 30, 1864 in Rome and was buried in the church of his titular deaconry Santa Maria in Aquiro .
