Doretta (domestic goose)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doretta (later also called Schröder ; * June 2000 in Mecklenburg ; † May 2009 in Berlin ) was a ganter who became known as the intended Christmas goose of the then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .

Life

Doretta hatched on an organic farm in Mecklenburg in early June 2000 . When Gerhard Schröder toured Brandenburg in August 2000, among other things , he ordered the supposed goose in Lenzen , where it was fattened together with 700 other animals on a pasture owned by the Landschaftspflege GmbH. She weighed 7.5 kilograms when she was to be slaughtered in December 2000 on an ecologically managed farm in Gladebeck (Lower Saxony).

Allegedly on the intervention of the then nine-year-old daughter of his wife Doris Schröder-Köpf , Schröder decided not to have Doretta slaughtered . However, tabloids had previously appealed to show mercy to the animal and to take US President Bill Clinton as an example, who had given up a turkey for Thanksgiving and given life to one turkey at a time. Doretta returned to Lenzen from Lower Saxony. Schröder and his family did not visit the ganter there. Instead, there was a rush of journalists there. In 2001 it turned out that Doretta was not a goose, but a ganter.

Schröder financed his maintenance until 2005 by sending a crossed check annually. Care had only been agreed for the duration of the chancellorship. For Schröder's successor in the Chancellery, Angela Merkel , Doretta was not an issue. The Berlin association "Leben mit Tiere" took over responsibility.

In June 2006 Doretta moved to Berlin and was housed in the animal enclosure of a nursing home in Zehlendorf . There the residents renamed Doretta “Schröder”. As the only ganter in the enclosure, the animal was unhappy, so it was given a goose to company, which the residents of the home christened "Angela". The ganter died in May 2009 of a liver tumor . His companion got a different Ganter as company, which was named "Tyson" after the American boxer Mike Tyson .
