Doris Dowling (born May 15, 1923 in Detroit , Michigan , † June 18, 2004 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

life and career

After a short work as a choir singer on Broadway , Doris Dowling made her film debut in 1944 with a small role in the drama Tomorrow Belongs to Us . A year later, the actress received the first important role of her career from Billy Wilder : Dowling played a prostitute with no prospects at the side of Ray Milland and Jane Wyman in Wilder's addictive drama The Lost Weekend . Other tragic female roles followed, such as a murdered alcoholic in the film noir The Blue Dahlia alongside Alan Ladd . After her career in Hollywood fizzled out, Dowling moved to Italy in the late 1940s. There she had another success in 1949 with the lead role as the gangster bride in the then scandalous thriller Bitter Rice . Dowling played Bianca in Orson Welles ' production of Othello in 1952. After her return to the USA, Dowling appeared almost exclusively in television productions, such as Einsatz in Manhattan , The Incredible Hulk, and Simon & Simon .

In 1984 Dowling retired from acting after over 60 film and television appearances. Her older sister was the actress Constance Dowling (1920–1969). Doris Dowling was married three times: from 1952 to 1956 with the band leader Artie Shaw , from 1956 to 1959 with the producer Robert F. Blumhofe and from 1960 until her death in 2004 with the producer Leonard B. Kaufman . She was in a relationship with Wilder from 1944 to 1945.
