Dorothea of Saxony (1563–1587)
Dorothea von Sachsen (born October 4, 1563 in Dresden , † February 13, 1587 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a Saxon princess from the House of Wettin and by marriage Duchess of Braunschweig and Lüneburg as well as Princess of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .
Life
Dorothea was a daughter of the Elector August of Saxony (1526–1586) from his marriage to Anna (1532–1585), daughter of King Christian III. from Denmark . Dorothea was one of four of the 15 children in her parents' marriage who survived their father.
On May 5 and 6, 1584, the two daughters of Elector Augustus, Dorothea and Anna, were married twice . "All kinds of delicacies were organized" to celebrate. At the shooting held for this, the Reichsgulden was minted at 21 groschen (1584) .
She married her fiancé, the future Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1564-1613) , on September 26, 1585 in Wolfenbüttel . At that time, her mother Anna was already seriously ill - she died only a few days later - and Dorothea “ had been very nauseous when she said goodbye and cried miserably. "
The Saxon artist Heinrich Göding the Elder , who was born in Braunschweig, created a 16-page poem in memory of Heinrich the Lion on the occasion of the wedding . On this occasion, Heinrich Julius embodied the legendary Guelph Duke himself in a Trionfo.
The marriage was intended to consolidate a Protestant alliance of German princes, which was promoted by Count Palatine Johann Kasimir von Simmern , who had married Dorothea's sister Elisabeth in 1570 .
Dorothea died at the age of 23 giving birth to her only child.
