history
The place was originally referred to as the Skint Chestnut (= "bare chestnut"), because a chestnut tree that had been stripped of its bark stood here, which served as a conspicuous meeting place for the Indians. In 1870, Skint Chestnut was named the county seat of the newly formed Douglas County. On February 25, 1875, the place was named a city and renamed Douglasville after the politician Stephen A. Douglas .
As early as 1860, the Georgia Western Railroad secured the right of way to build a railway line from Atlanta via Douglasville to Birmingham . The outbreak of the Civil War initially prevented further development. Finally, the Georgia Pacific Railway Company opened the line to Atlanta in May 1882 and the line to Birmingham in November 1883.
