history

prehistory

On the Dreifaltigkeitsberg there is a rampart made up of several section ramparts and an edge fortification. Settlement is assumed based on finds such as the section ramparts for the Neolithic and later for the early La Tène period (around the middle of the 5th century BC). It is possible that the Trinity Mountain was also used during the Urnfield Culture in the 9th century BC. Inhabited. Various other, but insufficient finds suggest a settlement z. B. appear questionable during the Bronze and Hallstatt periods or the Merovingian period and the early Middle Ages .

history

The buildings on Trinity Hill
The Trinity Church

In 1415 the Bishop of Constance built a stone chapel on the summit. He named it after the Holy Trinity . In 1455 the chapel was built by Archduke Albrecht VI. bequeathed by Austria to the St. Moriz Abbey in Rottenburg-Ehingen . In 1461 a brotherhood was founded in Spaichingen , which attracted more and more pilgrims.

On July 26, 1666, the foundation stone for a church was laid on the place where the chapel stood. After only seven years of construction, the church stood and was consecrated in 1673 by Bishop Georg Sigismund von Konstanz. In the same year the mountain, which was previously called Baldenberg, received its name Dreifaltigkeitsberg. In 1699 the first plans for a monastery were made , but they failed at the time.

Due to the huge number of pilgrims , the church was expanded between 1761 and 1767 and the interior was decorated by the artist Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer . In 1874 the church was renovated.

On December 12, 1923, the Church Foundation Council donated the land and buildings to the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary , the Claretians . In 1924 a monastery was founded by the Claretians. Since then, take priests to pastoral service in the surrounding communities.

After the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) a novitiate house was built for Indian priest candidates . The former house of the community has been converted into a youth house, in which Caritas supervised school camps and recreational activities take place. In other buildings there is a restaurant and various rooms for meditation and contemplation.

Since 1967 the housekeeping has been in the hands of the missionaries of Saint Anthony Claret from Brazil.

Since 2005 there has been a crib exhibition on the Trinity Mountain.

Hill climb

Between 1934 and 1938, the Dreifaltigkeitsberg hill climb took place on the Dreifaltigkeitsberg on a 4.2 km long route . The fastest drivers of the day and thus winners in automobiles were Willi Briem (1934; Amilcar ), Rudolf Steinweg (1935; Bugatti T51A ), Walter Bäumer (1936 and 1937; Austin ) and Leonhard Joa (1938; Bugatti T51A).

Since 2007 there has been a mountain time trial for cyclists in connection with a mountain run every year at the beginning of July.

leisure

In addition to its religious significance, the city's landmark also plays a role as a local recreation area. The walk up the mountain on the easily accessible path with a height difference of approx. 320 meters is a regular pleasure for many Spaichingers. In addition, numerous hiking and biking trails, for example to the Klippeneck glider airfield about three kilometers away, invite you to exercise. The local hang- gliding club also operates a launch site for hang- gliders and paragliders .
