Dustin J. O'Halloran (born September 8, 1971 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American pianist and composer . He works and lives in Berlin .

Life

Born in Arizona, Dustin O'Halloran spent his childhood in Hawaii and Los Angeles . He began taking piano lessons at the age of seven and gave his first concerts at the age of eleven, where he interpreted his own compositions. During his studies at Santa Monica College he met the singer and musician Sara Lov , with whom he founded the band Devics in 1996 . The band released various albums on the Bella Union label and completed international tours. Working together on the soundtrack of Giuseppe Bertolucci's film L'amore probabilmente , Dustin O'Halloran gained his first experience in the field of film music. In 2004 O'Halloran emigrated to Italy, where he laid the foundation for his career as a composer and solo pianist . He recorded his first solo album (Piano Solos, 2004) in the rural Emilia-Romagna region . A little later, the director Sofia Coppola became aware of Dustin's solo debut and hired him for the soundtrack of her historical drama Marie Antoinette . Further film score work followed, including William Olsson's An American Affair (2009) and Drake Doremus Like Crazy (2011). The latter was honored with the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival . Individual pieces from O'Halloran's compositions have already been used for well-known advertising campaigns, including 2007 for Audi , 2009 for “ Sky TV - See the best” and 2011 for “ Ikea - Mein Traum”.

In 2017 he received nominations for the Oscar and Golden Globe Award for his collaboration with Hauschka on the score for the feature film Lion - The Long Way Home (2016) .

In 2018, O'Halloran was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Music genre

Dustin O'Halloran's compositions are inspired by important representatives of classical and contemporary music, such as Erik Satie and Arvo Pärt , Frédéric Chopin and Philip Glass . The pianist is characterized by a filigree style of composition, which can also be influenced in his music by the enigmatic musical worlds of the bands Sigur Rós and Efterklang . His music lives through the minimal and the striving for emotional clarity in its melodies.

Dustin O'Halloran regularly performs live as a solo pianist or accompanied by strings. In 2008 O'Halloran opened the concerts of the Canadian musician kd lang on her international tour and in the spring of 2010 he toured the USA with his composer and pianist friend Hauschka , supported by the Magik Magik String Orchestra. His musical cooperation partners include the British group Soulsavers and Mark Lanegan ( Screaming Trees , Gutter Twins ), Jóhann Jóhannsson , Peter Broderick , Nils Frahm , Kira Kira , and Adam Wiltzie ( Stars of the Lid ). With the latter he recorded the album "A Winged Victory for the Sullen" in 2011.
