Eßfeld is a district of the Giebelstadt market in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg in Bavaria .

Geography and transport links

The place is two kilometers north of the core town of Giebelstadt. The Saarbach, the left source brook of the Schafbach , flows through piped. Federal road 19 runs to the west . From this, the district road WÜ 13 , which touches the town in the south, branches off . The Franconian Marienweg leads through Eßfeld .

history

Eßfeld was first mentioned on January 20, 820. In a document, Emperor Ludwig the Pious granted the Diocese of Würzburg certain possessions relating to the villages of Eichesfeld and Gibulestadt . The place name, which later also appears as "Eichsfelt", "Eychsfelt" and "Eygsfelt", refers to the clearing of an oak forest or to a settlement area or a clearing near the oaks.

In 1683 Eßfeld was subordinated to the Heidingsfeld office. In the course of secularization , the district court of Ochsenfurt in the Kingdom of Bavaria came into being in the early 19th century .

In the course of the municipal reform in 1972, the district of Ochsenfurt , which also included Eßfeld, was added to the district of Würzburg. Eßfeld was incorporated into Giebelstadt in 1978 with its districts of Klingholz and Weidenmühle .

In 1910 the place received a central water supply, in 1912 electricity followed.

Population development

In the 16th century, based on the data from various registers, the number of inhabitants should have been around 350. In 1812 there were 501. There were no major changes until the end of the Second World War . As a result of the displaced persons from the former German eastern regions , the number of inhabitants then skyrocketed. In 1950 there were 847 inhabitants, 289 of whom were displaced. By the early 1960s, the number had normalized to 550. After a slight decrease due to structural change in agriculture, the number rose from the 1990s to 715 in January 1997 due to a new settlement area.
