Edi Sudrajat , also Edi Sudradjat (born April 22, 1938 in Jambi , Sumatra , † December 1, 2006 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian general , commander in chief of the armed forces and minister of defense and security.

Life

Sudrajat, who began a military career after attending school, was one of the first to graduate from the military academy founded in 1960. He then began his career as an officer in 1961 as platoon leader of the 515th Infantry Battalion in Jember ( Jawa Timur (East Java) ) before he joined the army's so-called "Red Beret Corps" to conduct operations there against the Republican Army of the South To cite the Moluccas . He later took part in operations against the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (Organization for a Free Papua) and against communist activists between 1963 and 1969 .

In 1980 he was a Brigadier General and Commander of the Air Defense Command in the leadership of the Kostrad , the most influential military association of the Indonesian armed forces. In 1981 he was promoted to major general . In this rank he was commander of the military district II responsible for the provinces Sumatra Utara , Sumatra Barat and Riau , based in Medan . He was then until 1985 commander of the military district III responsible for the provinces of Jawa Barat and Banten , based in Bandung . In 1985 he was promoted to lieutenant general . First he was head of the operations department of the armed forces from April 1985 to June 1986, before he was deputy chief of the army staff from 1986 to 1988. In 1988 he became head of the Office for Coordination of Support for the Development of National Stability.

In February of the same year he was appointed General and Chief of Staff of the Army (Kepala Staf TNI Angkatan Darat). As a member of President Suharto's GOLKAR party , he was finally appointed Minister of Defense and Security (Daftar Menteri Pertahanan) in February 1988. From February to May 1993 he was also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces ( Tentara Nasional Indonesia ). In 1993 he was also the commander of the Indonesian contingent GARUDA IV of the United Nations peacekeeping forces . In that year he was also traded as the successor of Sudharmono as Vice President of Indonesia, but his predecessor as Chief of Staff of the Army, General Try Sutrisno , became the new Vice President. After the unrest in East Timor in early 1995, he sent a commission of inquiry to Dili .

During the change of power from Suharto to Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie , he played a leading role. On February 20, 1998, he was replaced as Minister of Defense and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces by General Wiranto . On July 11, 1998, he ran unsuccessfully against Akbar Tandjung for the chairmanship of GOLKAR.

This was one of the reasons for the establishment of the Judiciary and Unification Party (PKP) in December 1998. At the same time, he considered the current chairman of the GOLKAR, which had been dominant for decades, Akbar Tandjung, to be incapable of implementing the reforms necessary after Suharto's loss of power. In its party program, the PKP argued that the GOLKAR's stance on the national ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 constitution could endanger the unity of Indonesia.

During his military and political career he has received several awards. In 1977 he was awarded the honorary title “Tan Sri” by the Malaysian government . In 1989, the Republic of Korea was awarded the Order of National Security "Merit Tong II" .
