Eduard Hübner (born May 27, 1842 in Dresden , † August 30, 1924 in Konstanz ) was a German genre and portrait painter of the Düsseldorf School as well as a sculptor and poster artist . From 1881 to 1883 he taught at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin .

Hübner was the son of the painter, professor and gallery director Julius Hübner and his wife Pauline , a sister of the painter Eduard Bendemann . His siblings included the classical philologist Emil Huebner and the chemist Hans Huebner . His nephews were the painters Heinrich and Ulrich Hübner . His cousins ​​were the painter Rudolf Bendemann and the Admiral Felix von Bendemann .

After the Vitzthumschen Gymnasium , Hübner attended the Dresden Art Academy for a year , where his father taught. Karl Wilhelm Schurig taught him at the Dresden Academy . In 1860 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he stayed until 1869. He studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1861 to 1867. There he took lessons from Karl Ferdinand Sohn (2nd class painting school) and Andreas Müller (art history), but above all from his uncle Eduard Bendemann (1st class genre and history painter) . In Düsseldorf he became a member of the Malkasten artists' association . Hübner went on several study trips to Italy and spent three winters in Rome . In 1869 and 1870 he stayed in Paris . He later settled in Berlin, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1883. In the following years he lived in Dresden, Düsseldorf and Konstanz .

From 1867 he sent the academic exhibitions in Dresden, from 1872 the Berlin ones. For the Leipzig Opera he made a painted stage curtain as a replica in 1882 . In addition to being a painter, he also worked as a sculptor and poster artist. To honor his brother Hans, who died in 1884, he made his bust in 1886 . A particular success was a poster that he created for the Dresden tobacco and cigarette company Kosmos .
