Eduard Swoboda (born November 14, 1814 in Mariahilf , today Vienna , † September 13, 1902 in Hallstatt , Upper Austria ) was an Austrian portrait , genre and history painter .

Life

Eduard Swoboda was born in the Vienna suburb of Mariahilf No. 24/25, he was the older brother of the landscape and animal painter Rudolf Swoboda (1819-1859). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Anton Petter . In 1833 he received the Gundel Prize as a member of the School of Historical Drawing Reasons .

With Friedrich Schilcher he learned various painting techniques, including fresco painting . Swoboda first exhibited in 1834. In 1835 he moved to Bohemia , where he initially carried out portrait assignments in Karlsbad and then continued studying with Christian Ruben at the Academy of Fine Arts there in Prague . This was followed by stays in Pest (1836), Preßburg (1842) and Frankfurt am Main (1848). Swoboda married Josefa Janscha, the daughter of the porcelain painter Franz Janscha, in Vienna in 1843 . After his wife died in 1854, he married his second wife Josefine Müller in 1857, the daughter of the lithographer Leopold Müller and sister of the oriental painter Leopold Carl Müller . Swoboda belonged to the Albrecht Dürer Association and in 1861 became a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. He lived in Vienna at Gumpendorfer Strasse 57.

Swoboda died while on vacation in the Salzkammergut and was buried in Vienna's central cemetery. Children from his second marriage were the painter Rudolf Swoboda and the portrait painter Josefine Swoboda .

Eduard Swoboda was a versatile Viennese artist. In oil painting , he mainly dealt with portraits , genre and history painting . The cycle of portraits of Viennese and artists living in Vienna became very famous for lithographs . Swoboda also worked a lot in the fresco technique. He created wall paintings for churches in Trumau near Baden, Lower Austria, in Reichenau , Bohemia, and in Schemnitz , now Slovakia. He also restored frescoes in the Great Orangery of Schönbrunn Palace and paintings in Laxenburg , Lower Austria. In 1916 a large commemorative exhibition with his works took place in the Vienna Künstlerhaus.
