Eduardo Koaik

Eduardo Koaik (born August 21, 1926 in Manaus , state of Amazonas, Brazil , † August 25, 2012 in Piracicaba , state of São Paulo ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Piracicaba .

Life

Eduardo Koaik, son of Miled José Koaik and Helena Elias Koaik, studied philosophy at the seminary in Rio de Janeiro (Seminário Arquidiocesano do Rio de Janeiro) and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he was ordained priest on April 8, 1950 . He became professor of fundamental theology and spiritual director of the seminary in Rio de Janeiro. He also held offices in the ordinariate of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , was involved in youth movements and was vicar general .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 22, 1973 titular bishop of Noba and auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . The Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on January 6, 1974 ; Co- consecrators were José Alberto Lopes de Castro Pinto , Auxiliary Bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, and Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais , Bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda . His episcopal motto was Construir na caridade ("To build up in love").

On November 30, 1979 he was appointed coadjutor bishop sede plena of Piracicaba by Pope John Paul II and after the resignation of Aniger de Francisco de Maria Melillo on January 11, 1984 he succeeded him in office as Bishop of Piracicaba. He built up seminars with theological and philosophical propaedeutics, consecrated 34 diocesan priests and 33 permanent deacons, founded 17 new parishes, five future parishes and two Marian shrines.

From 1979 to 1983 he was President of the Brazilian Caritas . He was a member of the Commission for Pastoral Care, responsible for the media, later for the laity and a member of the commission that initiated the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (Renovação Carismática Católica (RCC)). He was a member of the Commission of the Conference of Latin American Bishops ( CELAM ). From 1991 to 1995 Koaik was president of the Regional Sul - 1 , which represents the archdioceses and dioceses of the state of São Paulo in the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil, CNBB).

On May 15, 2002, John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. Koaik died in August 2012 of complications from cancer.
