Eduardo Torroja Miret

Eduardo Torroja Miret (born August 27, 1899 in Madrid ; † June 15, 1961 there ) was a Spanish civil engineer .

Eduardo Torroja graduated in civil engineering with a degree in 1923. In 1939 he was appointed professor at the Escuela de Caminos in Madrid and appointed director of the Instituto Técnico de la Construcción y del Cemento . In 1959 he founded the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS).

He played a pioneering role in the development of concrete shell construction. His most famous buildings include the grandstands of the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela racecourse in Madrid from 1941 with a horizontal cantilevered roof made of curved reinforced concrete shells . In 1954, Torroja was awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal for “promoting the economy through technical innovation” .
