The Eesti Laul 2017 took place on March 4, 2017 and was the Estonian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev ( Ukraine ).

format

The show consisted of three programs: two semi-finals and the final. Ten participants competed against each other with their songs in the semi-finals. Five of them each qualified for the final. The first four finalists were determined 50% by the jury and 50% by televoting. The fifth finalist was determined exclusively by televoting in a second separate voting round. In the final, the ten qualifiers from each of the two semi-finals competed against each other. Three of them qualified for the superfinal . 50% of this was done by the jury and 50% by televoting. In the superfinal , the winner was determined exclusively by televoting. In 2017 the jury consisted of the following people: Metsakutsu, Kadri Voorand , Niko Nykänen, Eva Palm, Jüri Pihel, Maia Vahtramäe, Sten Teppan, Aleksandr Žedeljov, Ingrid Kohtla, Meisterjaan and Allan Roosileht.

Attendees

Interested parties could submit their songs from the beginning of September 2016 to November 1, 2016. The performers and composers should be Estonian or permanently resident in Estonia. Nonetheless, foreign composers were allowed to participate. But 50% of the composers of the song had to be Estonian. The remaining 50% may come from abroad. As a composer, however, you were not allowed to submit more than three songs, unless you took part in the songwriting camp , which was organized by the Estonian Song Academy in spring and autumn 2016. In the end, a jury selected the 20 entries that were presented on November 8, 2016. Among them were some repeat offenders such as Elina Born , who represented Estonia together with Stig Rästa at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna in 2015 . Daniel Levi also took part in the Eesti Laul in 2015. Also Lenna Kuurmaa took already in 2005 at the Euro Vision Song Contest in Kiev in part, at that time as part of the band Vanilla Ninja . But there under the flag of Switzerland .
