Marriage is ... ( 'Til Death , analogous translation: "Until that death ...") is an American sitcom broadcast from 2006 to 2010 . The focus is on Eddie and Joy Stark, a couple who have been married for more than 20 years and live in suburban Philadelphia .

action

The two couples, Stark and Woodcock, live next door to each other in a suburb of Philadelphia . At the beginning of the series, the Starks have been married for 8,743 days (almost 24 years), the Woodcocks for 12 days. The Starks use the Woodcocks as an example to see how much their own relationship has lost harmony and romance over the years. Conversely, the Starks make it clear to the Woodcocks that their honeymoon wo n't last forever. After the Woodcocks leave the series, Stephen and Simona become the befriended couple of the Starks.

Eddie - actually Edward Meryl - Stark is a history teacher at a high school and the central character of the series. He sees himself as a mentor to his newlywed neighbor Jeff Woodcock and never tires of giving advice on how to treat wives. Since Eddie is very cynical , Jeff doesn't always like to follow this advice - and when he does it rarely has the desired effect. Jeff becomes the new assistant principal at the beginning of the series at the same high school where Eddie teaches. The two therefore form a car pool and get closer than Eddie would like.

Joy Stark is a consultant in a travel agency. She is more aware than her husband of what has been lost in her marriage (as opposed to that of the Woodcocks) and often seeks to revive those traits. Since the relationship between the spouses is stable and based on genuine affection, she usually succeeds. She survived the long years of marriage at Eddie's side because she is able to react quickly to unforeseen situations.

Steph Woodcock is writing her dissertation on the French Revolution and is therefore not currently employed. During the summer vacation, Jeff finds out that Steph doesn't really work on her dissertation, but leads a relaxed life at home. She is much more attractive than her husband and married him because after her wild student days she was looking for a man who was caring and reliable. Jeff therefore occasionally wonders if he can keep this woman forever.

Allison Stark, the daughter of the Starks, lives with her husband, Doug Von Stuessen, who believes he is in a sitcom, in a motor home in their parents' backyard. At the beginning of the series, both study at Upton University. Allison is graduating from there with a degree in ceramics, with Doug also being her course instructor.

Charisma

The show first aired in the United States on September 7, 2006 . The second season was broadcast from September 2007. Season 3 ran from September to October 2008 and consisted of only 7 episodes. The fourth and final season of the series ran between October 2009 and June 2010. This was unusually long with 37 episodes, as it contained many episodes that were intended for the third season according to the production code. So ran u. a. three older episodes only after the last episode produced.

Jeff and Steph were replaced in the third season by the new main character Kenny (JB Smoove).

From February 2008, the first season was also shown on German television on Comedy Central . The second season was broadcast in Germany from March 2009. Season 3 ran from November 30, 2009 in German-speaking countries on the Swiss television station SF Zwei . From January 18, 2010, it ran in Germany on Comedy Central . From April to June 2010, the fourth season also experienced its German premiere on Comedy Central . Seasons 3 and 4 were shown in Germany - in contrast to the original version - approximately in the order in which they were produced. The episode list is based on this order, which is why the last two seasons have a different number of episodes than in the USA.

From July 5, 2010 to February 8, 2011, the series was broadcast under its original title Til Death on the VOX channel. As part of this, the two missing episodes of the third season (3.15, 3.18) were shown for the first time in Germany.

Trivia

  • The actor Ray Romano has a short guest appearance in episode 16 of the first season ( The Italy Trauma ). When Eddie apologizes to Joy in the restaurant, Ray turns around and asks: "What else do you want to hear, lady?" When Joy later asks who the guy is, Eddie replies that he thinks he has worked with him once . This is a reference to the Everyone Loves Raymond series , in which Brad Garrett played Ray's brother Robert Barone. A much clearer allusion to the same series can be found in episode 13 of the fourth season, in which there is a dream dialogue between Eddie and Joy, which contains the sentence: "Everyone loves Raymond's robes."
  • Ted McGinley , known among other things from the sitcom A Terribly Nice Family , has a guest appearance as Eddie's friend Bill Webster in episode 21 of the first season ( My Friend Webby ).
  • Barry Bostwick , known from Chaos City among others , has a guest appearance in episode 62 (fourth season) ( Eddie's book ) as Doug's father George von Stuessen.
  • Richard Kind , also from Chaos City , has a guest appearance as Eddie's gay brother Charlie in episode 54 (third season) ( The Brother's Guardian / Mr. T and the Men ).
  • The American comedian Gilbert Gottfried plays the rich, somewhat strange neighbor Tommy in two episodes of the fourth season.
  • Kevin Nealon and Susan Yeagley , who are married in real life, play a couple who are friends with the Starks in season four.

In March 2010 the broadcaster FOX decided not to order any more episodes due to moderate ratings. This means the end of the series after four seasons.

DVD

The first two seasons are available on DVD in Germany and the USA.
