The Ehn is an approximately 36 kilometers long left tributary of the Ill in the French department of Bas-Rhin in the Grand Est region . Depending on the source, it drains a catchment area of 165 to 167 km², which extends over a section of the Vosges and the Upper Rhine Plain .

geography

course

The Ehn rises at 947  m on the gentle northeast slope of the Neuntelstein ( 970  m ) in the extensive forest area Forêt d'Obernai-Bernardswiller in the area of a mountain mat in the municipality of Ottrott . The river Magel rises just a little to the west , and the catchment area of the larger Andlau lies in the south .

The Ehn initially flows to the northeast and joins several short source streams early on before it enters a narrow, wooded valley around 250 meters below, where the D214 follows it shortly afterwards on the left bank . From here it is the border stream to the municipality of Bœrsch and takes in several short streams from both sides, including the Moosbach , the Eisenbach and the streams from the Wildbretstal and Engental from the left .

You reach the Ottrotter district of Vorbruck , the first settlement on the bank, where you near Koepfel Castle at the foot of the Aukopf ( 513  m ) between Heidenkopf ( 787  m ) and Hohenburgerberg ( 700  m ) flows into the four kilometer long Dimpfelbach from the right . It crosses under the D214 , which meets the D426 here , and follows a longer row of houses in the municipality of Bœrsch, whose village center is northeast of the valley.

Immediately afterwards follows the district of Klingenthal , which stretches on both sides of the river. Here a 900 meter long stream flows from the right from the Lützelburg . It now runs east with slight fluctuations. In the district of Kupferhammer , it returns entirely to the municipality of Ottrott. This is where the valley opens up, the first Ehn Canal branches off to the left at the Parc-Aquarium Les Naïades and it now leaves the Vosges into the western Upper Rhine Plain.

At the same time, it affects the district of Ottrott le Bas in the north, which is adjacent to the village of Ottrott . Immediately afterwards it crosses the municipal boundary to Obernai , where it now only flows through agricultural area. It is accompanied by a lush tree gallery, which briefly widens to a small wooded area right in front of the Neumuehle . After this it turns to the southeast, here the Boersch ( Muehlbach ) flows parallel for a short time, before shortly afterwards it joins the Ehn from the left at the settlement boundary of Obernai.

The Ehn now flows around the city center of Obernai to the north and then east of the city center, passing under the Peter and Paul Church and passing the synagogue . After she has crossed the D422 , she enters the municipality of Niedernai . After a section in the again open corridor, it crosses the A35 autoroute and from now on flows eastwards through the village center of Niedernai and further down through the Meistratzheim, which is mostly on the left . Before the Ehn bridge of the D426 it turns to the north-northeast. Shortly afterwards, another canal called the Ehn Canal ( Canal de Décharge ) branches off to the right in the corridor Nachtweid , which communicates with an extensive system of canals and ditches and meets the Ehn again after about seven kilometers at Blaesheim .

It flows through the eastern part of the village of Krautergersheim and, after the confluence of the Scheidgraben, a thin strip of the municipality of Bischoffsheim from the left , before it crosses the southeastern part of the municipality of Innenheim , where it takes in the water of the 13-kilometer-long Rosenmeer from the left . The Ehn now reaches the community of Blaesheim and a little later, after the mouth of the Ruthengraben, passes the village center on the southern edge from the left. Then it turns to the east-southeast, crosses the municipality boundary to Geispolsheim in a forest area and briefly changes back to the northeast.

The Ehn crosses the southern part of the town of Geispoldsheim and from now on runs eastwards with small changes of direction. It picks up the Ergelsenbach from the right and finally flows, after it has passed through a hospital area and under the Route nationale 83 , a little southwest of the city of Illkirch-Graffenstaden at 142  m from the left and west into the lower course of the Ill.
