history

Eibenthal was founded in 1827, during the second wave of Czech immigration, which aimed to settle the area near the border at the Iron Gate, mainly for strategic military reasons ( military farming ). The settlers came mainly from Plzeň , Klatovy , Čáslav and Beroun . The source of income for the population here was not only the timber industry but also mining. The asbestos mining has now stopped, but the anthracite extraction in the nearby town of Baia Nouă was until recently an important economic factor, but was also stopped after a mining accident in 2007. Like the other Czech villages in the Banat, Eibenthal is also struggling with severe population decline, primarily due to emigration. While around 600 people still lived here in 1934, in 2000 only 302 inhabitants were counted.
