action

The trained carpenter Johannes Keinath is returning to his home on Lake Constance after 20 years . He had once left after a quarrel with his brother Justus in which Johannes had struck him down. But Jupiter still hasn't forgiven him. When Johannes is robbed by two crooks after going to a bar, he injures one of the crooks so badly that he believes he has killed him. He fled out of fear. At a train station, he happened to be auctioned off baggage. With a suitcase bought at auction, he flees from the approaching police to the station toilet. When an impatient passenger shakes the door and shouts: "Damn it, who shits here for so long?" (Quote from Carl Zuckmayer's play Der Hauptmann von Köpenick ) he receives the answer: "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick". Then the door opens and John appears in the habit of a monk.

As "Brother Johannes" he goes into hiding in a neighboring village and soon wins the trust of the Protestant pastor Arne Clausen. He is fighting for the preservation of his dilapidated church, which according to the will of the rogue glazier owner Ulrich Neigenfindt is to be replaced by a modern glass building on the motorway . Neigenfindt has also snatched the precious church windows under the nail. The fact that the attractive carpenter's widow Sylvia, whom he has long had an eye on, gets along very well with brother Johannes, does not suit the glazier at all. However, John thinks the building structure of the church is good and his argument “The church should be left in the village” is heard in the community.

When Neigent finds out that the supposed monk is being wanted by the police, he believes he can eliminate his rival. In a service to decide about the future of the church, John appears again as a carpenter, his brother reconciles with him and explains that John did not kill anyone and the congregation decides to keep the church.
