action

Roger Porter is a young and somewhat naive black man and the long-lost son of Walter Whitney, a successful white Jewish businessman from San Marino , California. Walter lives a frustrating life with his contentious wife and his unpleasant stepdaughter, whose antics he has to come to terms with. One day, Roger shows up in Walter's office and reveals that he is the result of Walter's longstanding relationship with a late black woman. Walter had left Roger's mother to concentrate on his professional career. The only person who knew about Waltee and Roger's mother's relationship was his anti - Semitic father-in-law, who is also his boss. Walter's father-in-law had warned him that if he continued his relationship with Roger's mother he would see to it that Walter's career would end.

Walter tries to make amends by telling his wife Vivian that he would like to adopt Roger. She accepts but regrets the decision when she learns the truth about Walter and Roger's relationship. She throws Walter out of the house, his father-in-law fires him, and Walter's friends become estranged from him. He also finds that his former colleagues are not helping him. Roger checks into a motel and tries to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Walter's father-in-law watches Walter's every move to make sure Walter isn't getting help from the world he knew. The father-in-law wants to ensure that Walter returns to his old life without Roger. Walter and Roger move into an apartment together and Walter finds a mini job in which he shovels horse manure. Nevertheless, Walter is determined to stay with his son.

Later Vivian and her father come to Walter to tell him that they miss him. He now has to choose between his old life and Roger. He chooses the former, but his conscience troubles him, after which he decides to sacrifice everything again to return to his son. He ignores his father-in-law's threats that this time he will really make him suffer.

The film ends with Roger starting to study at Walter's old university in order to achieve something in life. Walter, proud of his son, finally decides to make up for the time he has missed with his son.
