Elfreda is made up of the old English words ælf ( elf , nature spirit ) and þryð ( power , strength ).

In the late 19th century, Elfriede was a common first name with increasing popularity in Germany. In the 1910s and early 1920s, the name was often among the ten most common girls' names of each year. Then its popularity gradually declined. Since the late fifties, hardly any children have been called Elfriede.
